These are versatile, general-purpose stainless steel grades with good resistance to atmospheric, many organic, and inorganic chemicals, as well as to food and beverages. They have excellent corrosion resistance, good formability and weldability, making them ideal for use in a wide range of applications, including capillary tubes. The L in 304L refers to “Low Carbon,” meaning it has lower carbon content, making it less prone to carbon precipitation and thus is more suitable for welding and higher temperature applications.
Compared to the 304 grades, these molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steels have better overall corrosion resistant properties and particularly excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. Like 304L, 316L also refers to lower carbon content which offers better resistance to carbide precipitation during welding. Capillary tubes made from these grades are used in demanding conditions, including marine environments or in pharmaceutical and medical applications.
This is a titanium stabilized austenitic stainless steel. Its main advantage over other austenitic stainless grades like 304 and 316 is its resistance to intergranular corrosion at elevated temperatures (due to carbon-titanium combination). It has excellent resistance to oxidation and excellent strength at high temperatures, making it suitable for capillary tubes used in heat exchangers, high temperature chemical processes and in aircraft and exhaust stream applications.
Similar to 321 stainless steel, 347 is also an austenitic stainless steel but it’s stabilized by the addition of niobium and tantalum rather than titanium. This results in the material offering high temperature oxidative resistance and overall corrosion resistance similar to that of 304 stainless steel. It also exhibits good resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range. This makes it suitable for applications where 304 stainless might become sensitized, or where 304L has insufficient high temperature strength.
