Surface Finishes for CNC Machined Parts

Apart from custom CNC machining services, we also provide complete surface finishing options for precision machined parts. If you require custom finish not on this list, please do get in touch as it is likely we can source it for you.

as machined (ra 3.2μm ra 126μin)
As machined (Ra 3.2μm / Ra 126μin)

This finishing option with the shortest turnaround time. Parts have visible tool marks and potentially sharp edges and burrs, which can be removed upon request.

smooth machining (ra 1.6μm ra 63μin)
Smooth machining (Ra 1.6μm / Ra 63μin)

Smooth machining is similar to a ‘As machined’ finish, but with less visible machine marks. Parts are machined at a lower feed rate, with no hand polishing.

polishing (ra 0.8μm ra 32μin or better)
Polishing (Ra 0.8μm / Ra 32μin or better)

Polishing is the process of creating a smooth and shiny surface by rubbing it or by applying a chemical treatment.

bead blasting cnc machined parts
Bead Blasting

Machined parts are bead blasted with glass beads which results in a uniform grainy texture and reduced machining marks.

tumble finishing
Tumbled

It is a process that tumbles vibrating media on machined parts to remove sharp edges and burrs.
Tumbling can be used to remove machine marks from exterior surfaces.

bead blasted + anodizing type ii (glossy)
Bead blasted + Anodizing type II

The parts are bead blasted to #120 grit before being anodized type II—ideal for increasing the aluminum part’s corrosion resistance and cosmetic effects.

bead blasted + anodized type iii (hardcoat)
Bead blasted + Anodized type III (Hardcoat)

The parts are bead blasted to #120 grit before being anodized type III. Type III (Hard Coat) is thicker and adds a wear-resistant layer to Type II’s corrosion resistance, suitable for functional applications.

black oxide cnc machined parts
Black Oxide

Black oxide is a conversion coating that is used on steels to improve corrosion resistance and minimize light reflection.

powder coated
Powder Coated

This is a finish of applying powdered paint to the components and then baking it in an oven, which results in a stronger, more wear- and corrosion-resistant layer that is more durable than traditional painting methods.

chromate conversion coating (alodinechemfilm)
Chromate Conversion Coating

Chromate conversion coating is used to improve the corrosion resistance of aluminum and aluminum alloys while keeping their conductive properties. It is also applied as a base layer prior to priming and painting parts.

nickel plating
Plating

Include Nickel Plating, Silver Plating, Gold Plating, Zinc Plating, Chrome Plating, Tin Plating and etc, it is ideal to reduce corrosion, improve the appearance and function of solderability and electrical conductivity.

cnc precision dlc parts
DLC Coating

DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating is a thin, amorphous carbon film that exhibits exceptional hardness, low friction, and high wear resistance, making it an ideal surface treatment for various applications such as automotive components, cutting tools, and medical devices.

  1. CNC machining is a manufacturing process that uses computer-controlled machines to create precise and complex parts from raw materials. The process involves using a computer program, or CAD (computer-aided design), which is used to create a 3D model of the part to be produced. The CAD file is then converted into a format that can be read by the CNC machine.
  2. The computer program controls the CNC machine with various tools, such as drills, cutters, and grinders. The raw material, such as metal or plastic, is loaded onto the machine’s worktable and secured. The CNC machine then uses its tools to cut and shape the material according to the specifications in the CAD file.
  3. During machining, the CNC machine constantly checks its position and adjusts its movements to ensure that each cut is made precisely where it needs to be. This level of precision allows for highly accurate and consistent results.
  4. Once the machining process is complete, the finished part is removed from the machine and inspected for quality control. Any necessary finishing touches can then be applied before the part is ready for use in its intended application.

CNC machining and 3D printing are two popular manufacturing methods used to produce parts with different advantages and limitations.

CNC machining involves removing material from a solid block using precision cutting tools according to a computer-aided design (CAD) file. It can produce highly accurate and strong parts from various materials, including metals, plastics, and woods, making it ideal for industrial applications.

On the other hand, 3D printing builds parts layer-by-layer from a digital model designed in CAD software. While slower than CNC machining, 3D printing offers greater design flexibility and is well-suited for producing complex geometries or small-scale prototypes.

The choice between these two methods depends on the product’s specific requirements, such as strength, surface finish, complexity, cost, and time-to-market.

There are several types of CNC machining processes, including milling, turning, drilling, and grinding.

Milling involves removing material with a rotating cutting tool to create complex shapes and contours.

Turning rotates the workpiece while a cutting tool removes material to create cylindrical parts.

Drilling uses a rotating cutting tool to create holes in the workpiece.

Grinding uses an abrasive wheel to remove small amounts of material and create smooth surfaces.

Additionally, other types of CNC machining processes, such as electrochemical, laser, and waterjet, use different methods to remove material from the workpiece. The type of CNC machining used depends on the part’s geometry, the machining material, and the required precision and surface finish.
