About The Material

Copper is a soft, malleable, and ductile metal with a reddish-orange color. Copper has been used by humans for thousands of years due to its excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, its corrosion resistance, and its ability to be easily shaped and alloyed with other metals.

Copper is also a valuable industrial metal and is often used as a benchmark for the performance of the global economy due to its importance in the manufacturing and construction industries.

Copper has excellent properties for machining, such as:

The Most Common Grade of Copper for CNC Machining

The most common Copper AT-Machining used for CNC milling or CNC turning are C110 and C101

When it comes to completing a successful project, selecting the proper Copper can be absolutely essential. Investing time into researching each type’s specialized benefits is always wise – that way you’ll know which one will perform best for your specific needs!

Copper C101 (also known as Oxygen-Free Electronic or OFE copper) contains a minimum of 99.99% copper, with no oxygen content.

Copper C101 is more ductile and malleable than Copper C110, and it has better conductivity and thermal properties.

Copper C101 is commonly used in electrical applications such as bus bars, transformers, and electrical wiring due to its excellent conductivity.

Copper C110 (also known as electrolytic tough pitch or ETP copper) contains a minimum of 99.90% copper, with small amounts of oxygen and other impurities.

Copper C110 has better strength and hardness than Copper C101.

Copper C110 is often used in plumbing and mechanical applications where its strength and resistance to corrosion are important.

Hardness Rockwell 30T Tensile Strength, Ultimate Tensile Strength, Yield Elongation at Break Tensile Modulus
Copper C101 55-80 HRB 280-350 MPa (40-51 ksi) 80-220 MPa (12-32 ksi) 40-65% 110-130 GPa (16-19 x 10^6 psi)
Copper C110 45-70 HRB 360-450 MPa (52-65 ksi) 110-300 MPa (16-44 ksi) 5-40% 110-130 GPa (16-19 x 10^6 psi)

The Challenges in Copper CNC Machining

Our precision copper machining meets ISO 2768 requirements, ensuring a perfect fit every time.

Select appropriate tools: Choosing the right cutting tools for copper is essential to minimize tool wear and achieve precise shapes and tolerances. Harder and more wear-resistant tools, such as carbide or diamond, are recommended.

Adjust feeds and speeds: Copper’s high thermal conductivity means that heat can quickly build up during machining, leading to tool wear and workpiece deformation. To avoid these issues, optimize the cutting parameters, such as feeds and speeds, to maintain a steady chip load and reduce the amount of heat generated during the process.

Use proper coolant: Choosing the right coolant is crucial for effective heat dissipation and lubrication during copper machining. Consider using water-soluble coolants with high thermal conductivity and good lubrication properties to minimize heat buildup and prolong tool life.

Manage workpiece surface: Due to copper’s softness, it is prone to burrs and surface imperfections during machining. Therefore, it is important to use appropriate tool geometry and cutting strategies to minimize these effects. Additionally, using post-processing techniques, such as deburring or polishing, can help achieve a smooth surface finish.

CNC Machined Copper Applications

Copper is a highly versatile metal that is widely used in a variety of industries due to its excellent electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and malleability. One of the most common methods for processing copper into complex shapes and precise dimensions is through CNC machining.

Surface Finishes For CNC Machined Copper Parts

AT-Machining can provide the perfect finishing touch to your CNC machined Copper parts with a range of powder coating, bead blasting, and plating options. Each finish offers its own advantages – so make sure you select the one that meets all your requirements!

Name Description
aluminum as machined As machined The machined aluminum parts are left with visible tool marks and potentially sharp edges and burrs, which can be removed upon request.
aluminum alloy beadblasted finish Bead Blasted Give the machined parts a smooth and uniform matte surface finish, thereby removing tool marks.
aluminum polished Polishing Creating a smooth and shiny surface by manually polishing in multiple directions or by applying a chemical polish treatment.
aluminum decoretive plating Powder Coat Powder coating involves applying a dry powder to the surface of the copper part and then baking it to create a durable finish. This can be a good option for copper parts that will be exposed to harsh environments.
nickel plating Plating Copper parts can be plated with other metals, such as nickel or chrome, to improve their appearance or to add additional functionality, such as improved wear resistance.
