Rib in CNC Machining
A rib is a narrow, raised strip of material that stiffens a part without making the entire wall or base thicker. Think of the reinforcing strips inside a housing or along a bracket.
In a part milled from solid stock, the rib is left standing as material around it is removed.
What Matters in Design and Machining
Consider thickness, height, length, and spacing together. A tall rib can bend sideways under cutting forces, while a long unsupported rib may vibrate. Leave enough room between ribs for the cutter and its shank to reach the base.
Give the rib a useful connection to the part. Its position and direction should support the intended load. A base fillet can smooth the transition, but its radius must suit the available tooling and clear nearby components.
Details Designers and Machinists Can Overlook
Lightweight geometry can still require substantial machining. Closely spaced ribs leave narrow channels that restrict tool size and complicate chip removal.
Keep support while removing material. Finishing one side to a thin section before machining the other can allow the rib to move. Plan staged cuts and finishing allowances around the actual geometry rather than applying one sequence to every rib.
Check critical shape after unclamping. A rib that looks straight while held may bow after unclamping or as residual stresses redistribute.
