Slot in CNC Machining

A slot is a long, narrow recess or opening machined into a part. It may stop at a specified depth or pass completely through the material. Slots commonly guide components, hold keys, provide clearance, or allow position adjustment before fastening.

What Matters in Design and Machining

Consider width, depth, and end shape together. A narrow slot limits cutter diameter, while greater depth requires more reach. This combination makes the tool less rigid, increasing the risk of uneven walls and dimensional errors. Chips also need a clear path out rather than becoming trapped and cut again.

An enclosed slot made by conventional end milling normally has rounded ends or internal corners. The mating component must clear these radii; a square-ended component may not seat correctly even when its overall dimensions appear suitable.

Details Designers and Machinists Can Overlook

Cutter diameter does not guarantee finished slot width. Tool movement under load can affect the result. For a close-fitting slot, allow a controlled finishing operation and check width along its length and depth—not only at the opening.

Width and position serve different purposes. Width controls clearance or fit, while location and orientation determine alignment. A correctly sized slot can still fail to guide or locate a component if it is misplaced.

Slot length is not the available adjustment travel. Account for the space occupied by the bolt or pin, and ensure its washer remains supported throughout the intended adjustment range.

Check the material remaining beneath blind slots and beside nearby edges. Thin sections can flex during machining. Remove burrs without excessively rounding edges that serve as guiding or locating surfaces.
